Photonics & Optical Design recruitment

Photonics is one of the smallest, most specialised disciplines we cover. Experienced optical and laser engineers are a fraction of a pool like embedded software, and the UK's sit concentrated in a handful of clusters rather than spread evenly across the country.

An optical design engineer working on lens and system-level design and a laser systems engineer working on beam delivery and laser safety are different hires. We take the brief at that level across telecoms, defence, life sciences and quantum technology, because it decides whether a shortlist is any use.

What this covers

  • Optical design & engineering
  • Laser systems design
  • Fibre optics & optical communications
  • Photonic integrated circuits (PIC)

What makes a strong Photonics & Optical Design candidate

A strong photonics or optical design candidate can usually point to a design or system they took beyond simulation, into an actual aligned, working optical setup, since optical design that looks correct in Zemax or Code V doesn't always survive tolerancing, alignment and real-world assembly. For laser systems roles, direct experience with laser safety classification and beam delivery, not just laser theory, is a strong signal of hands-on deployment experience rather than academic exposure alone. Given how tightly networked and cluster-based this talent pool is, we also weight adjacent experience, a strong physics or optical engineering PhD with limited industry time, for instance, since candidates with transferable depth are sometimes a more realistic route to a shortlist than waiting for an exact like-for-like match in a very small pool.

Where the talent sits

UK photonics talent concentrates around a small number of established clusters rather than the wider electronics base: South Wales (the compound semiconductor cluster around Cardiff and Newport), Southampton (built around the University of Southampton's Optoelectronics Research Centre and its fibre optics heritage), and Scotland's photonics and quantum technology base around Edinburgh and St Andrews. Aston University's photonics research in Birmingham adds a further pocket outside those three. Candidates in this discipline are used to being approached directly rather than applying to adverts, and are often reluctant to relocate away from a cluster with an established local employer base and research ecosystem.

Typical hiring timeline

Most briefs get a first candidate within days rather than weeks - see real timelines from past searches. Seniority, location and clearance status set the pace from there.
