Why Security Clearance Is the Real Bottleneck in Defence Hiring

Clearance, not talent, is usually the constraint

Most defence and aerospace hiring managers assume the hard part is finding someone with the right technical background. In practice, once you’ve found them, the clock you’re actually racing is HMG’s, not the market’s.

Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks are quick, but Security Check (SC) can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on the candidate’s history, and Developed Vetting (DV) can run well past six months. None of that is something a recruiter can speed up, but it is something you can plan around.

What actually helps

• Start the clearance conversation in the first interview, not after an offer
• Prioritise candidates who already hold live or recently-lapsed clearance
• Build the sponsorship process into your offer timeline, not after it
• Keep a contractor or interim option open for roles that can’t wait

Already-cleared candidates are a different hiring problem entirely

Engineers who already hold SC or DV clearance are scarcer and move faster than the rest of the market, often juggling multiple live conversations at once. If your process has more than two stages or takes longer than two weeks end to end, you will lose them to whoever moves first, not necessarily whoever pays best.
